The most common drugs responsible for deaths due to overdose happens to be opioid painkillers which are procured illegally without a prescription//, say researchers.

According to the researchers, powerful opioid drugs like oxycodone or fentanyl are now being frequently prescribed by Doctors, with a motive to realizing better results in chronic pain management. Not surprising that, this trend runs parallel with an increase in deaths due to painkiller overdose.

Though there is no apparent relation between these two trends, researcher’s advice that in the zest for offsetting opioid abuse, Doctors must not hesitate prescribing these medicines in cases where it is absolutely necessary. Researchers also observed that most opioid poisoning deaths spoke of a patient history of substance abuse, where they had obtained the drug without a prescription.
