Ovarian cancer prevented by exposure to sunlight

Recent studies have dug out evidence that link cancer to lack of exposure to enough sunlight. // According to the studies conducted by scientists from University of California, San Diego, those who live closer to the equator have lesser chances of contracting ovarian cancer. Their study, published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, explains that more exposure of sunlight will result in more production of Vitamin D which seems to help prevent the disease.

This study confirms the results of previous studies which concurred that risk of cancer was strongly linked to levels of Vitamin D in the blood. Vitamin D is synthesized in the body only on exposure to sun.

Dr. Cedric F. Garland and his colleagues studied data collected from more than 175 countries on ovarian cancer .The data was scrutinized in relation with UV radiation, levels of ozone in atmosphere and latitudinal location of cases studied. They found that most of cases of ovarian cancer were from higher latitudes where sunshine is very limited. They also noticed that lower ozone levels and increased ultraviolet ray exposure were associated with lower rates of ovarian cancer.

Researchers, however, caution that these findings may be widely affected by other factors like genetics or choices of lifestyle and contraceptive choices. They have also warned women not to indulge in sun basking to prevent ovarian cancer.
