Bhubaneswar: A hospital here confirmed the first case of the mosquito-borne dengue virus in the state with a patient testing positive for the disease, a doctor said Monday.//

"A 30-year-old man was admitted to Kalinga Hospital here Friday with high fever and headache," Paresh Kumar Jena, consulting physician at the hospital, told IANS.

The patient, who hails from Rajasthan, is a resident of Kaniha in the western district of Angul.

"His blood platelet count was 90,000 at the time of admission but went down to 70,000. Seeing the intensity of the headache and decreasing platelets in his blood, we wanted more pathological tests," said Jena.

"Since the immunoglobulin (IG) test facility is not available in the state, we sent his blood sample to the New Delhi-based Dr. Lal Path Labs. The report reached us on Sunday and confirmed that he is suffering from dengue," he added.

Jena said this was the first case of dengue reported in the Kalinga hospital this year. Two dengue cases were reported in 2005.

Dengue, caused by the bite of a female aedes aegypti mosquito, is a recurrent phenomenon in India in recent years, especially during the post-monsoon period.

The virus has claimed over 100 lives across the country this year with the number of reported cases crossing 7,000.
