A Shanghai hospital official said that one of the 10-month-old conjoined twins, who were separated last week in a complicated surgery has died. //The surgery, which took place on Thursday, was hailed as a "miracle" by the press and hospital alike, but apparently, one of the twins, Hu Jingxuan, was unable to tolerate the stress.

The official Xinhua News Agency reported that the stronger of the twins, Chen Jingni, was in a stable condition, while the other twin developed complications over the weekend. On Thursday, doctors at the hospital had revealed that they were forced to operate since the girls had stopped gaining weight and also had a congenital heart condition.

The twins shared a liver, spleen, gall bladder and digestive tract and weighed 16 pounds before the surgery. The girls were born to a farm family and in the photos provided by the hospital looked unusually frail.

Reports said the hospital had planned for the surgery right after their birth. A business group had raised $25,000 to pay for the operation.
