One of Australia's biggest bread companies is not happy with the proposal to fortify all available brands of bread with folic acid. They are petitioning the state and federal// governments to veto this proposal.

The objective of such a proposal is to enhance the foliate levels in women of child-bearing age. The folic acid fortification will help offset birth defects, such as spina bifida.

If you ask Ian Greenshields from Goodman Fielder about what he thinks of the proposal, he says it is akin to stuffing foliate enriched bread down people's throat , whether they like it or not. The choice should rest with the consumers, he affirms.

'You're going to be dosing 26 million people to try and prevent about 30 birth defects per year. So it doesn't seem to make a lot of sense, particularly when there's a lot that's unknown about the long-term effects of folic acid.' He said.
