Offspring's birth weight affected by father's diabetes

A recent study published in the British Medical Journal suggests that there is an association of diabetes in fathers, to the birth weight of their offspring. In contrast to overweight children given birth by women with diabetes, children born to men with// diabetes are likely to weigh less than other children.

Children born to men with diabetes weigh on an average 186 grams less than other children and this significant difference cannot be explained by father's height or social class.

The study involved a large group of people born in 1958 in Britain who were interviewed then and were evaluated four decades later. The follow-up respondents consisted of 8000 parents, 35 of whom were men with diabetes and 25 of whom were women with diabetes. Researchers say that the findings support their hypothesis that common genetic factors contribute both to the risk of non-insulin dependent diabetes and decreased pre-natal growth".
