Thiruvananthapuram: Medicated coir mats spread across the walls of a patient's room have been found efficeffective acious in treating ailments like skin diseases, hypertension and rheumatic complaints, a study says.//
A study group attached to the Government Ayurveda College here said patients kept in medicated rooms were cured in shorter less time than those staying in normal rooms.
The study involved 36 patients, of whom 19 were kept in medicated rooms and the rest admitted to a general ward.
The walls of the rooms were covered with coir mats dyed in medicinal herbs and the bedspreads and pillows were also soaked in the same herbal preparations.
Though all the patients were administered the same medicines and food, those kept in medicated rooms got cured faster, said N. Viswanathan, an ayurveda doctor.
Patients suffering from skin diseases were cured in two weeks when kept in the medicated rooms, while those in the general ward took 26 days more, he said. Rheumatic patients in the medicated rooms started getting better after a week, while those in the general ward took three weeks.
The six-month pilot study was supported by the Kerala government, which funded gave the college Rs.500,000, Viswanathan told IANS.
"We have now submitted a full-fledged project report to the Kerala government asking for financial support of Rs.10 million. We want the study to be done on more patients and to prove it statistically," he said.
Viswanathan said the government appeared positively inclined as the move would give a fillip to the ailing coir industry.
The Balarampuram Handloom Weavers Society (BHWS) here provided the technical know-how for preparing the medicated coir mats.
"This is certainly a path-breaking study which has found success and we expect the government to come to our help with financial support for a proposed study on a bigger group of patients," said K. Ravi, forme
r scientific advisor to the state government, who led the pilot study team.
BHWS was in the news recently after it developed medicated clothes using herbs.
