Novel Technology For Early Detection of Gastrointestinal Cancer

A novel technology, Narrow Band Imaging that can detect gastrointestinal cancers with 95% accuracy, much earlier than other detection methods can be soon availed by residents in Delhi. //

The technique is based on a type of endoscopy (visualization of the internal organs through a telescope introduced through body cavities). Direct visualization of the internal regions of the digestive tract enables the physician to spot cancer or pre-cancerous lesions much earlier.

The technology exploits the potential of white light in the narrow bandwidth of blue and green region. Normal endoscopy uses white light illumination. This light is however scattered to a large extent, yielding very little useful clinical information. The use of the narrow bandwidth surpasses the above-mentioned drawback to allow for enhanced visualization of even subtle details.

Dr. Randhir Sud, Senior Consultant, Department of Gastroenterology, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital has stated that the new technology, that can distinguish normal and abnormal tissue has the potential to detect cancer with a 95% accuracy compared to a mere 50% accuracy with the conventional diagnostic methods.
