Nobel Prize – a ‘near miss’ for Indian Scientist coule

The Indian Scientist couple, Dr Utpal Bhadra and Monika Pal Bhadra, narrowly missed the 2006 Nobel Prize for Medicine. Their work was comparable to the final winners-Andrew Z. Fire and Craig C. Mello. //

The finding of the role of RNAi (Ribonucleic acid interference) in gene silencing got the two American scientists the prestigious prize. This breakthrough work was published in the journal Nature in 1998.

As a matter of fact, the Indian scientist couple, the Bhadras, from Hyderabad and Dr Jim Birchler of University of Missouri, in US had established in 1997 that gene silencing occurs in animal systems.

Terming it as a `narrow miss' Dr. Bhadra, who is with the Hyderabad-based Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) said
