No Threat of Bird Flu Assures Govt

NEW DELHI: The government of India has today assured that there was no real threat of Bird Flu (Avian Influenza) in the country //

The government has set up a nationwide surveillance system to keep a close eye on the on the domestic poultry population and migratory birds and to constantly monitor the situation in the country and take appropriate action as and when required.

"We are keeping a close watch on the situation. Extensive surveillance is on for both domestic poultry and migratory birds," Animal Husbandry Secretary P M A Hakeem said to the press.

So far the surveillance has shown that India is free of the bird-flu. Mr.Hakeem added: "there is absolutely no need for any worry on this."

Five centers including the UP-based Central Disease Diagnostic Laboratory along with its four regional centres in Pune, Jalandhar, Bangalore and Kolkata have been given the task of providing the scientific support.

"Recently, we have intensified surveillance to include poultry around the bird sanctuaries as well as migratory birds visiting these sanctuaries," Bandopadhya said, commissioner of Animal Husbandry Department.

The central government is following the WHO guidelines on the matter. Regarding import of poultry products, Mr.Hakeem said: "We import very less and whatever quantum is allowed has to go through a strict quarantine regime".

The animal husbandry commission has also put stress on accepting the "bio-security" measures to combat any possible outbreak, saying "there is no harm even if the precautionary measures are being adopted". The farmers whose birds are sacrificed would be given compensation.
