No Smoking Day Inspires Many to Kick the Butt

Even as eighteen months are remaining for the ban on smoking in public places to be enforced, a huge number of smokers are making plans to puff out the habit for good on the National No Smoking Day. // According to statistics released last year, during the past 50 years, nearly 6.3 million in the UK have died due to smoking.

According to a survey initiated by the event's organizers, nearly 41 per cent of smokers - around five million people, will make a serious effort to quit smoking on the no smoking day. Going by the records, this is perhaps the largest numbers ever recorded who have decided to kick the butt.

Pro-smoking lobby groups opine that despite the ban due to be in force in 2007, smokers will still resort to using tobacco at home. But anti-smoking campaigners firmly hold ground that this ban will encourage many to give up the habit.

Ben Youdan, No Smoking Day's chief executive, said: "People put it off and put it off, but the fact that there was such an overwhelming vote to make public places smoke-free was the straw that finally broke the camel's back."
