No Avian Flu In West Bengal And Kerala

The samples of poultry and ducks from Matigara, Darjeeling District in West Bengal & Kuttanad in Kerala have tested negative for Avian Influenza (H5 & H7) as per report received from High Animal Security Disease laboratory (HSADL), Bhopal. Unusual mortality in birds had recently been reported from these two places.

In Matigara, unusual mortality was reported from Aziz poultry farm, resulting in death of 2500 birds on 5-6th May, 2007. A team headed by Deputy Director (AH) reached the farm on 07.05.07. The dead birds found at site were buried under the supervision of the team following proper procedure. Postmortem revealed Newcastle disease (Ranikhet) with Infectious Bursal Disease (IBD) (Gumboro). Samples were sent to HSADL, Bhopal, which have been tested negative for Avian Influenza (H5&H7). No further unusual mortality has been reported from Matigara.

In Kuttanad, reports had been received about the death of about 2000 ducks in five days in some villages on 27.04.07. The Scientists of Avian Disease Diagnostic Laboratory, Thiruvalla along with a team of veterinarians visited the sites and conducted detailed examination and autopsy on the duck carcasses. The samples were collected and sent to HSADL, Bhopal, which have been tested negative for Avian Influenza (H5&H7). No further unusual mortality has been reported from Kuttanad.
