The National Chemical Laboratory (NCL) and Emcure Pharmaceuticals Ltd, a Pune-based company have jointly come out with a new drug for the treatment of hypertension. Announcing this at a press conference here on Thursday,// NCL director Sivaram and Emcure managing director Satish Mehta said the chirally pure S-Amlodipine, a product of their collaborative research, will be a great boon for the patients suffering from hypertension.
Stating that Emcure is among the first few in the world to introduce this product, they said the company has been granted permission from Drug Controller General of India for the manufacture of both bulk as well as formulations of S-Amlodipine.
Although Amlodipine is a proven therapy for the treatment of hypertension, it is commonly associated with side effects like headache, dizziness, flusing and abdominal pain, they said. But clinical study of S-Amlodipine has shown that none of the patients in the treatment group reported any such side effects, they said adding, NCL has already filed Indian and foreign patent applications. S-Amlodipine is the first of many more chirally pure drugs on which the NCL and Emcure scientists are working, they added.
