New back support device can improve balance for older people

Women at the age of 60 and above can have less back pain from osteoporosis related// curving of the spine by wearing a back supporting device and doing some special exercises.

In a study presented by the researchers from Mayo Clinic had said that the new specially weighed back support device can not only decrease the back pain but can also cause extensive improvements in strength for the women who had suffered the disease.

Elderly population remains at a larger risk from falling and sustain bone fractures due to their age related osteoporosis that can cause problems in balancing themselves as well. Researchers of May clinic said that their research aim was to see if it is possible to alleviate this problem by shifting the center of gravity in people who suffer from spinal curvature from osteoporosis.

The participants of the experimental group had used a weighted kypho-orthosis, which had been specially designed to support the back and help the person support his body weight better between both the legs. The weights used and their placement in the back of the patients needs to be decided by the doctors, depending on the curvature of the spine for the patients.

Results of the study showed that women who wore the devise had improved in maintaining their balance, walk and had less of back pain.
