New Yorkers More Likely To Die From CHD

A report recently published says, New Yorkers are less likely to die of a stroke than people in any other state in US, but has the second-highest death rate from coronary// heart disease.

The American Heart Association's annual Statistical Update done in 2003, only 35 of every 100,000 New York residents died of a stroke and 213 per 100,000 residents of coronary heart disease.

Oklahoma leads with 228. Hawaii had the lowest with 96 deaths per 100,000.

“Some of [the disparity] is real," said Dr. Wayne Rosamond, chair of the AHA statistics committee, "but it's well known that there are regional differences in the way doctors fill out death certificates."

Rosamond gives hope that death from heart disease nationwide has been steadily waning at about 3% a year for decades, though much work remains. "Cardiovascular disease is still the No. 1 killer" nationwide, he said.
