Neurological Recovery Aided by Manliness

A study conducted by Glenn Good and team from University of Missouri, Columbia indicates that the masculine tendencies aid in the recovery of neurological injuries//. While it has been assumed all along that such tendencies were the barriers to good health, this study offers a new dimension to this issue.

Generally it has been said that men don’t take care of their health. But the same quality is said to aid in their recovery in traumatic brain injuries.

Good conducted his study on fifty middle aged rural white men. These men had suffered traumatic spinal and brain injuries. They were asked to give the details of their physical strength, sexual performance, independence and successful career achievement. These factors were analyzed later.

It was deduced that there was a negative effect on the recovery when there was an increased masculinity. They also found that men who believed in male dominance over women were less happy in their life. But men who had concentrated on their career, success, power and competition had good standing in their society. They also had better recovery after hospitalization.

Hence Good opines that when psychotherapy is combined with the conventional procedures of healing it is bound to show good results in these cases. He also tells the therapists to encourage masculine tendencies to aid in their recovery but dissuade them form exerting control over women.
