Neurological Disorders Overcome By Proteins

Proteins have been known to be useful in muscle repair and buildup. They have an important role to play in the metabolic activities// of the body as well.

Scientists have discovered a new protein that controls development of brain cells and could eventually lead to medical interventions to help those with neurological disorders such as schizophrenia and multiple sclerosis, reports Xinhua.

The protein, juxtanodin, is believed to control the development of specialised brain cells relating to the nerve signalling network, according to a report Wednesday by the English language daily Today.

The newspaper quoted the scientists as saying that "if these brain cells develop abnormally, the shield protecting nerve fibres can dysfunction or get destroyed... nerve pathways are affected and neurological disorders occur".

A nine-member team from the Medicine School of the National University of Singapore here, which made the finding, said the discovery would help them better understand neurological disorders and could eventually lead to the development of therapeutic interventions that would benefit those afflicted with such diseases.
