Neemuch-Eye Donor Capitol of India

Although eye donation was a taboo at first eventually Neemuch, a town in Madhya Pradesh, soon grew to become the eye donor capitol of India. //

Over 3,000 people in India have had their vision restored to them because of donations from Neemuch.

Indian politician, Shyammukh Garg from Neemuch had pledged his eyes before he died because of his blind grandson, some decades ago. And now reports show that the town has the highest per capita eye donation rate in India.

As one shop owner Vasudev Mantrani said, 'The body is useless when we die. What can be better than being able to help a needy person even after we are no more?'

Some of the obstacles that the donation movement faced were religious beliefs like that those who donated their eyes would be blind when they were born into their second life.

The Garg family has however reportedly pushed to campaign for eye donation, encouraging the movement in billboards, newspapers and door-to-door visits.

'We wanted others to be as happy as we were,' said son ML Garg.
