National Commission for Women to Investigate Unearthing of Female Fetuses in Pataudi

A three member-team of the National Commission for Women (NCW) led by Malini Bhattacharya will visit Pataudi in Haryana later today to investigate the unearthing of a large number of female fetuses .

The team will meet local authorities to get first hand information of the case and the investigation conducted so far.

The NCW spokesperson told reporters that they felt the need to seek first hand information from the site as it was likely that reporting of the incident had not been done properly.

The National Human Rights Commission has already begun investigation into the matter. Women and Child development Ministry has sought a report from the State Government on the issue.

On June 14, police had recovered remains of fetuses from a sewage tank near Buala Nursing Home in Pataudi, being run by Dr. A K Singh, who has since been arrested. A court in Gurgaon had recently convicted Dr. Singh for practising as a medical practitioner with a fake medical degree. In 1994, he had been fined for possession of spurious drugs.

It was alleged that the fetuses had been aborted after conducting sex determination tests which is banned under the Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques Act.

Incidentally, Haryana has one of the poorest sex ratio in the country.
