NYC health agenda: Dishing out calorie content of items on the menu

New York City’s health department is chewing upon the idea of listing the calorie content of the food available on the menu in restaurants // that dish out consistent portions. Fast-food brands have not been able to digest this proposition too well. They fear that this would make an apology of the fast food concept, which seems to race with time in reaching food to the table.

Commenting on the proposal, John Whipple, president of the National Council of Chain Restaurants, called it ‘expensive’ and said the end result of such a move would be akin to restaurants digging their own grave.

“Restaurants should be encouraged in their health education efforts, not dissuaded from such effort by misplaced regulatory policies,” Whipple said. The rule may be applicable to only one in ten restaurants, which may come into effect in July next year if the votes turn in favorably.
