NIDs Targets Immunizations To 22 Million Children In Bangladesh

Many governments have taken the National Polio Eradication Initiatives and now in an effort to eliminate polio re-emergence, 14th National //Immunization Days (NIDs) have planned to immunize 22 million children in Bangladesh under the age group of 0-5.

Government of Bangladesh will carry out the initiatives along with the support of UNICEF, World Health Organization (WHO), Rotary International and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Since March, four polio NIDs have been held and so far around 97 percent of children under age five were been immunized.

While addressing a press conference Louis Georges Arsenault, a representative from UNICEF said: "We cannot but feel encouraged at the prompt and effective response mounted in order to counter the threat of polio re-emergence.” Dr. Duangvadee Sungkhobol, the country's WHO representative, added: “By working together, I am optimistic that we will be able to make Bangladesh polio-free once again,”

Professor Sufia Rahman, an advisor for the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Bangladesh inaugurated the 14th round of the NIDs on Friday. Moreover, the government has taken measures for total elimination of polio by continuing another 4 rounds of the NIDs in 2007 followed by two rounds every year starting from 2008.
