NHS Makes A Strategic Move For The Dentists From Leaving Its Services

The Scottish Executive have announced their plans to offer dental students in Scotland a bursary scheme in an attempt to keep them in the NHS.//

It has been explained that under the financial support, the trainee doctors will be given £4,000 a year in return for a commitment of working for the health service after they graduate.

Lewis Macdonald, the deputy health minister, had announced the launch of the scheme yesterday when he met the students at the Dundee dental school. NHS in Scotland according to reports is suffering from a major shortage of dentists, with many patients unable to register with an NHS practitioner. The minister announced that in the scheme, the students from the second year of their course would be offered £4,000 to help with costs of their study. It was also mentioned that the students who wish to take up the grant for 4 years, would have to be attached with the NHS Scotland for a minimum period of 5 years.

This plan of the government is expected to cost them £1.74 million in the first year, and would probably rise to £2.28 million by the sixth year. Reports have indicated that the current figures indicate that tens of thousands of patients are still dropping off NHS dental lists in Scotland.
