The health sector of England has both doctors and nurses of Indian origin in large number. Some estimate this to be almost 20 percent.// The National Health Service (NHS) of England has honoured Jaswant Sira, from the Birmingham Children's Hospital, in the Wellchild awards.

Jaswant is specialist nurse who works with children affected by hepatitis has been honoured in a national competition. Children's health charity WellChild launched the competition to recognize people who have made an extraordinary contribution to improving children's health and well-being.

Sira, a clinical hepatitis nurse, was just the type of person the charity felt needs recognition. She was nominated by colleagues at Birmingham Children's Hospital, for her hard work, dedication and role as an advocate for non-English speaking families in the Asian community. She has also raised more than almost US$ 17,000 for the hospital's liver unit.

Said Professor Deirdre Kelly, who nominated her: 'Jaswant Sira's achievements are undoubtedly due to her unique personal qualities, her quiet determination to improve standards of healthcare and support in a particularly challenging area of children's medicine.'
