( The National Human Rights Commission (N...)NHRC Demands Report From Govt Of Rajasthan On Sex Determination Tests,Health

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Wednesday questioned the government of Rajasthan, about the action it has taken against the 21 medicos who involved //in the sex determination tests.

"The Rajasthan government should submit the report in four weeks," said a press statement issued by the commission.

Soon after a report was published in a newspaper May 5, a television news channel conducted a sting operation on the doctors conducting sex determination tests.

The commission took note of the reports after women's groups alleged that the government had not taken adequate action against the erring doctors. The women's groups had also carried out demonstrations against government inaction.

"These groups allege that the state government had failed in implementing the Pre-conception and Pre-natal Diagnostic Techniques (regulation and prevention of misuse) Act, 1994," said the press statement.

The demonstrators also alleged that 19 of the doctors had agreed to abort the fetus after sex determination.

The media reports said that three of the 21 doctors found to be involved in conducting these tests were from the government hospital in Chittorgarh district of the state.
