NDP Leader in B.C. Diagnosed with Endometrial Cancer

B.C. NDP Leader of three years, Carole James, 48, faces surgery later this month following the diagnosis of localized cancer of the lining of the uterus.//

The diagnosis was revealed during a routine medical checkup earlier in the week with biopsy confirming localized endometrial cancer, that has a recovery rate of 80 to 90 per cent.

The good news as NDP officials say is that James's cancer was detected early, and the prognosis is good. Surgery is planned for the end of July in Victoria.

According to NDP house leader Mike Farnworth James intends to be back at work in late August or early September and was "upbeat and confident" when he spoke with her.

He said, "This is a relatively simple surgery. It's just like any surgery. You need recovery time. And I wouldn't expect her to step aside, nor should she."

Premier Gordon Campbell stated the full support of every government member of the legislature for James saying that he was sure she would face this challenge with "optimism and determination."

James is reported to be going ahead with her plan to leave Victoria this weekend for a camping trip in northern B.C. with her husband.
