Myth of Type-A-Personality Linked to Heart Disease Busted

Type-A personality is not linked with heart disease even though human genes do contribute to person’s health and behavior according to recent studies by US. and European scientists.//

Absolutely no connection was found between a hard-driving personality and heart disease, which has busted long term held views and goes contrary to previous studies.

This was one of the first findings of a 10-year effort to measure the genes and traits of a single population of closely related people. The research is being conducted jointly by the U.S. National Institute on Aging, Italian and Sardinian researchers, and bio-statisticians at the University of Michigan. About 6,148 people aged 14 to 102 on the island of Sardinia in the Mediterranean Sea are involved in the study.

Goncalo Abecasis, associate professor of biostatistics in the Michigan School of Public Health said that the isolation and relative stability, of Sardinia were the factors that were in favor of choosing this island for the genetic studies. Statistical analysis on the project was done by him and Michigan post-doctoral fellow Wei-Min Chen.

Co-author David Schlessinger of the National Institutes on Aging in Baltimore said that the study promises to be a very rich source of new genetic insights.

The research appears in the Public Library of Science.
