Mumbai Alert: Possibility Of An Epidemic Outbreak

Six deaths of suspected leptospirosis and dengue in the densely populated areas of Kalyan and Dombivli, 60-odd km from Mumbai over the pat three days has raised panic among the residents.

The Municipal Corporation (KDMC) has been kept on high alert and has been forced to rush extra manpower// and drugs to the area. The three suspected lepto victims died of respiratory failure while the others of suspected dengue fever.

Blood samples will be sent for analysis tomorrow to the National Institute of Virology, and B J Medical College, Pune to confirm the cause of death.

The incubation period for leptospirosis is about 12 days, so there’s the fear that many cases will soon be detected at Kalyan.

Lack of proper clean-up following the floods (fumigation measures) has been held responsible for the situation. With fears of an epidemic breaking out, the state government has sent its medical teams armed with extra drugs to the affected areas. Chlorination levels are also expected to shoot up shortly in response to the situation. Anyway the situation in Mumbai calls for immediate attention and enquiry.
