Ms Adele McIntosh, 33, single young mother has died of a blood clot her lungs as she gave birth to twin daughters. She was admitted to Simpson's maternity// pavilion, part of the new Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, in the early hours. Ms McIntosh already had a 17-month-old son.

Doctors say that a blood clot formed in her lung, known as a pulmonary embolism, and caused her death. The single mother, who lived in Edinburgh's Gracemount, was pronounced dead shortly before 3am last Tuesday. Ms McIntosh's parents were being comforted by friends and family at their home in Gorebridge, Midlothian. The twins were named Jacqueline and Jennifer, would be cared for by Ms McIntosh's sister Elizabeth, 34. Ms McIntosh's son, James, is staying with his grandparents. One neighbor said that it was very devasting to hear of Adele's death. She also said that such deaths are very rare does not happen everyday with the existing modern technology.

A spokeswoman for Lothian and Borders Police said the force had been informed of the death, but there were no suspicious circumstances and a report would be submitted to the procurator fiscal in Edinburgh. The family has asked friends and relatives to donate money to the Simpson's instead of sending flowers. David Bolton, the chief operating officer of the University Hospitals Division of NHS Lothian, has confirmed an investigation into the death of Ms McIntosh.
