According to a latest study researchers say a simple drug might have the ability to save many lives. Most children who die of malaria// do not ever make it to a hospital. For children who do make it to the hospital, half of the deaths occur within the first day of admission.

Most anti-malaria drugs are given by injection, making it difficult to administer outside of a hospital. In order to more effectively treat malaria and save lives, researchers say more treatment options need to be available within the community.

Researchers conducted a study to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of giving an anti-malaria drug intravenously or as a suppository.103 children between the ages of 6 months and 5 years with severe malaria. The two treatments were found to be comparable.

Thus researchers suggest that for children with severe malaria, suppository treatments could be used to treat malaria close to home thereby saving many children’s lives with this method in the future.
