Most of the people in South India wake up to the lovely smell of homemade filter coffee. There is more reason to celebrate for these coffee lovers now, with firm evidence from recent research. //
Coffee provides more than just a morning jolt and has been found to contain substances called as anti-oxidants, which are beneficial to the human body. Antioxidants in general have been linked to a number of potential health benefits, including protection against heart disease and cancer.
Besides keeping one alert and awake, coffee has been linked to an increasing number of potential health benefits, including protection against liver and colon cancer, type 2 diabetes and Parkinson's disease, according to some recently published studies.
The study analyzed the antioxidant contents of more than 100 different food items, including vegetables, fruits, nuts, spices, oils and common beverages and found out that coffee had a good amount of primary anti-oxidants.
Of all the foods and beverages studied, dates actually have the most antioxidants of all based solely on serving size. But since dates are not consumed at anywhere near the level of coffee, the latter tops the food analysis on the combined basis of both antioxidants per serving size and frequency of consumption.
Other popular antioxidant sources such as tea, milk, chocolate, bananas, dry beans, corn and cranberries has been outranked by this wonder bean.
While the findings would seem to encourage people to go out and drink more coffee, moderation is necessary. In addition, fruits and vegetables are on the hit list because they are better from an over all nutritional point of view owing to their higher content of vitamins, minerals and fibre.
