Mobile Operating Theater to Cut Waiting Times

A mobile hospital that is being started in the grounds of the Aberdeen Royal Infirmary at a cost of £1 million, aims to cut down the waiting times for patients//. The hospital is equipped with an operating theatre and health bosses hope that bout 200 operations can be carried out here.

NHS Grampian said that this is the first Scottish theatre to employ a ward as well. The van has been leased from Vanguard Healthcare Solutions and the operations will begin from Monday. It has been hired for four weeks. "The Vanguard mobile operating theatre is an effective and flexible way for us to target resources exactly where they are needed," said Ken McLay, of NHS Grampian's acute services. "The unit has proved to be an innovative way to address the needs of particular groups of patients without affecting services to others and will help us to maintain and reduce our waiting times." This is the second time that such a theatre has been set-up on site. In March last year, 130 orthopedic operations had been carried out in a mobile theatre. In August St John's Hospital in Livingston had hired a theatre to carry out ear, nose, throat and general surgery.
