Migraine Patients Suffer From Gastric Stasis

Gastric stasis is generally suffered by people afflicted by migraine, according to a recent issue of the Headache. A delay in the emptying of the // stomach is also not uncommon among such patients during the migraine attack. The attack is not made worse as a result of the gastric stasis, as it was previously believed. Gastric stasis contributes towards slowing down of the absorption of the medicines by the human body, and it is very much a feature of the ailment.

The new data will contribute towards treating the patients better, according to the Swedish Headache Center's Sheena Aurora. GlaxoSmithKline had funded the research.

About 10 people who suffer from migraine were observed during the course of the study, and gastric emptying was measured with the help of gastric scintigraphy. The levels of migraine suffered by the patients matched with the criteria of the International Headache Society (IHS). Visual triggers were used in the case of migrainous subjects. All those who were studied had fasted overnight, and the meal given to them contained a radiopharmaceutical agent.

Those who suffered from the ailment were observed for as long as four hours to ensure better study results. Gastric stasis was found to be lesser in the case of migraines lasting for 150 minutes when compared to those attacks which lasted for 190 minutes.
