Microscopic lens monitors heart problems

An innovative way to predict risk of surgery. Lens as thick as two strand of human hair, can predict when complications are developing after coronary bypass surgery. The main problem with bypass surgery is that arteries tend to re-block, risking heart attack and requiring further treatment.// If changes in blood flow through the artery could be detected at an early stage, it's possible that such complications could be averted.

Researchers at the University of Texas have developed a microscopic lens that can be inserted into a newly blocked artery as a blood flow monitor. It allows the focussing of ultrasonic waves from an outside generator onto the walls of the artery. The waves can measure how the blood is flowing and so give a very early indication of any problems that might be developing. The lens system might also be applicable to other internal problems, such as the detection of small tumours.
