The infant formula Gentlease is being recalled from the market as stated by the FDA due to presence of presence of metal particles in some cans. // So this brand would not be sold in markets in US.

The makers of Gentlease powdered infant formula, Mead Johnson Nutritionals of EVANSVILLE, Indiana, initiated the voluntary recall of 24-ounce cans with batch number BMJ19 printed on the bottom of the cans.

The justification of the company for the recall is public health concern. As the metal particles, up to 2.7 millimeter in size, can pose a serious risk to an infant's respiratory system if the affected infant formula is aspirated into the lungs.

The FDA said "There were approximately 41,464 24-ounce cans of this lot of recalled product distributed, beginning on December 16, 2005, through many major retail stores across the country, so the consumer should concentrate on the code on the can rather than on the place of purchase. The affected products can be identified by the lot number and expiration/use by date embossed on the bottom of the can of BMJ19, use by 1 Jul 07.

The symptoms could be varied depending on whether there is damage to the throat or lungs. Damage to the throat may include coughing, difficulty swallowing or difficulty breathing; similarly damage to the lungs could include coughing and difficulty breathing."

Those who may have fed troubled infant formula to their baby and have concerns about the baby's health should contact the baby's health professional for guidance.

A joint investigation has been launched by FDA and Mead Johnson Nutritionals to find a solution and find the cause of this problem.
