Mercy Attempt Allowed for 12 KGMU Students

12 students from the King George's Medical University have been granted a 'mercy attempt', following five earlier unsuccessful attempts, to clear their respective// examinations. The Faculty Board took this decision in a meeting held at the medical university on Friday.

Rules so far have allowed medical students only five attempts to clear each professional. Although an examination committee was called to take a decision for this purpose, it was finally referred to the Faculty Board. Four students, of professional first year, and final first year and second year have been granted this 'mercy attempt' of one year. These students were mostly from 2002-2004 batches.

These students have however been made to sign an affidavit, to state that they would not ask for more attempts and this sixth attempt would be considered their last, irrespective of the outcome.

In the meantime the Faculty Board, constituting HODs, senior professors, and dean of university has issued a warning to students in their third year itself. Dr SK Agarwal, dean, KGMU, said, 'with this, the students would be aware that they would be given only five years and not more than that.'

In addition the Faculty Board has also approved a three-time hike in the exam fee of Diploma courses, Under-Graduate and Post-Graduate courses after a gap of 10 years. The fee hike was proposed to mete out expenditures of around 24 lakh by the university each year as against its revenue of Rs 10 lakh. The hike in fee structure would be from Rs 2500 to Rs 7500 for Diploma students, Rs 350 to Rs 1000 for the MBBS students, from Rs 3000 to Rs 9000 for MDMS through which improvements of various facilities is also planned.
