Mentally Ill Man Spent Two Decades in Chains

55-year-old Mansharam has spent the last two decades in chains in a small village called Baoli village of Vidisha district in Madhya Pradesh//. His family said that Mansharam did not move at all and spent all the time sitting quietly.

His brother Bhogchand says that Mansharam was chained to a post after he started attacking family members and other villagers. "We spent a lot of money to get him treated but nothing helped. He would start beating people the moment he was freed. For us, the last solution was to tie him up permanently," he said adding that the reason for this sudden change in his brother's behavior was not known. However, the two decades in chains seem to have clamed Mansharam down, since he rarely moves or talks these days. His son, Saudan Singh, a college student says, "Only once or twice my father tried to talk to me and that was when he was hungry or thirsty. We have also lost the key of the padlock. As he has the reputation of a mad person, nobody tries to talk to him." Kanhaiyya Tiwari, a village elder says that Mansharam had once attempted to kill a man, "I have seen him in a violent mood a couple of times. Once he nearly killed a man. I have seen the man spending the prime time of his life sitting at one place without any movement and becoming old."
