Mental Health Problems on Rise in Himachal Pradesh

Growing stress levels due to changing lifestyles has led to Himachal Pradesh having one of the highest mental health problems levels in the county, according to a survey //.

The latest countrywide findings of the National Sample Survey Organisation (NSSO) found that in Himachal Pradesh out of every 100,000 people, 195 had a mental problem.

Health officials said the survey had been carried out after 11 years.

Kerala has the highest numbers with 272 people per 100,000 affected, second in the list is Andaman and Nicobar Islands (211), Himachal is third (195) and Lakshadweep fourth with 177.

At the state's premier Indira Gandhi Medical College hospital here, patients include those taking treatment for clinical depression, schizophrenia and other related problems.

Around 90 percent of the hill folk of the state, with six million people, live in villages.

The state has one of the highest literacy rates at about 80 percent but also a high unemployment rate.
