Mental Health - NHS Trust Commences Specialist Transition Service

A specialist transition service has been instituted by the NHS trust to cater to mental problems afflicting the 16- to-18- year- olds.//

‘Minding the Gap’, a document enabled by Durham County Council's inquiry committee, recognized the need for a regular service for 16- to 18-year-olds, in Durham and Darlington. The report threw light on the differences in treatment meted out to the teenagers suffering health problems across six primary care trust areas in the region. The report substantiated the urgent need for streamlining the resources available to the teenagers.

The specialist transition service comprises of two teams – a south and a north one, with each team having a consultant psychiatrist, a psychologist and a well experienced mental health practitioner, equipped to handle the young. They will work along with six fully dedicated practitioners.

The service will assist teenagers suffering many severe mental health problems like depression, self-harm, mood disorders, behavioral problems, and eating disorders. The demarcating feature of this specialist service is its outreach work, where young people are observed in different settings – homes, at restaurants, and connection centers. This is done with a motive to understand the patient’s behavior in different settings and accord a befitting medical assistance.
