Men Continue To Pay For Sex Despite Having Partners

Scottish men continued to pay for sex despite having steady partners, according to a new study. One in 10 men polled in Glasgow admitted to visiting prostitutes recently while 27 percent admitted that it was a regular habit. //

"Approximately half of all men paying for sex were in a concurrent relationship," said Dr Tamsin Groom, of the Sandyford Initiative in Glasgow. The men paid for sex while at home or abroad, but used condoms in most cases except when they were out of the country.

Around 2,500 men were questioned at a sexual health clinic between October 2002 and February 2004. None of the men tested positive for HIV, but one in five had a sexually transmitted infections These included gonorrhea, Chlamydia and syphilis.

"This shows the possibility of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and, for men paying for sex abroad, the possibility of acting as a 'bridge' between different populations," Dr Groom said. The researchers said the percentage of men paying for sex could be higher since many did not want to admit it.

"In Asian countries the purchasing of sex acts is higher and is frequently considered to be normal male behaviour, with 73 per cent of Thai men buying sex," Dr Groom said. The details can be found in the journal Sexually Transmitted Infections.
