Memory loss may portend onset of dementia

A study conducted at Dartmouth Medical School in Hanover, New Hampshire has shown that even if tests for memory loss among old people is normal//, yet this could be one of the earliest signs of the onset of dementia.

Dr. Andrew Saykin and his associates with the help of MRI tests investigated different brain regions in 40 people who suffered memory loss without dementia, another 40 patients with early dementia, and 40 others who were absolutely healthy people.

The comparative study revealed that certain brain regions of those who complained of memory loss bore resemblance to those who suffered early dementia. The researchers opine that complaints of memory loss may portend early signs of dementia, even though tests may be normal. In the circumstance it is important to monitor these people for any tell tale signs.

The study participants had high educational and IQ levels. Researchers feel that further research is required to be done with patients who do not portray very high mental abilities so that the symptoms of illness can be understood better.
