Services in all state-run medical colleges in West Bengal continued to be paralysed for the second day today as medicos intensified// their stir against the Centre's decision to introduce OBC quota in educational institutions from 2007.
Over 2000 interns, housestaff and post graduate trainees in nine medical colleges and a couple of hundred more in two dental colleges boycotted classes as well as out patient services to hold protest meetings, dharnas and hunger strikes.
About 20 hunger strikers at the Bardhaman Medical College were reported to have fallen ill and were being given medicare while severe heat and a relay hunger strike was also taking its toll on junior doctors of the Chittaranjan National Medical College (CNMC) here.
CNMC junior doctor Shivalik Banerjee, spearheading the 14-day-old movement, said they were warming up for a massive protest rally on May 27 which will see the participation of over 5000 students from all medical colleges, IIM, IIT and many premier institutions of West Bengal.
Groups of students holding placards sat in protest demonstrations at the Calcutta Medical College, Chittaranjan National Medical College (CNMC), R G Kar Medical College, NRS Medical College, SSKM Medical College, R Ahmed Dental College and Guru Nanak Dental College in the metropolis.
Reports from medical colleges in Bardhaman, Bankura, North Bengal and Midnapore said agitating medicos were busy with last minute strategies for their show of strength on May 27.
