A U.S Researcher predict that in the years ahead, medical science miracles will be a fact - technologies that will transform medicine for various treatments will stand to// reshape the lives of people.
Donald Combs, associate dean of the health-planning department at Eastern Virginia Medical School, published an article in the British Medical Journal based on these technologies.
'Fat Fryer' Device that trim excess weight, Smart Diapers to diagnose childhood ailments and Microchips implanted in the body for monitoring chronicle illnesses are some of the technologies that will transform medicine in the years ahead.
Five Key Technologies:
Prof Combs cited that five key technologies would be used for future advances: (1) Molecular medicine and biometrics, (2) Nanotechnology, (3) Wave technology, (4) Biological bandages, (5) Robotics.
Wave technology (or) use of light wavelengths to steer the destruction of specific cells, could be used to destroy cancer cells in isolation but with greater accuracy than radiotherapy. Recent discoveries shows that lasers could destroy fat but do not harm other types of cells, he said.
Another prediction is the use of miniature telescopes that restore vision for patients with degenerative eye disease.
Tailor-made robotic parts could be manufactured for patients, who are in need of knee and hip replacements.
People suffering from long-term illnesses such as hypertension and diabetes could have microchips implanted under their skin to monitor their heart and respiratory rates, blood pressure and blood sugar levels. It is also becoming possible to analyse data on a single drop of blood, urine or faeces to detect harmful bugs ranging from anthrax to influenza – writes Prof Combs.
To conclude, prof Combs writes that the possibilities for these and other technologies to individually and collectively transform medicine and health care is increasing wit
