Medical Person As Health Minister To Improve Queensland's Health System

In order to improve the management of the Queensland's health system, the Australian Medical Association (AMA) has called for a doctor to head the system//.

Dr Sam Baker, AMA northern branch councilor, has said that Dr Bruce Flegg, the new Liberal leader, could be the ideal choice to improve the ailing system and added that Peter Beattie Government has failed the people of Queensland when it comes to health.

He said "I think having a medical person as the health minister will bring a better understanding of the health system to the politicians. Put it this way, I don't think they could do a worse job than what the Beattie Government's done over the last eight years."

He also said that it is impossible to run the Townsville Hospital at full capacity if adequate budget was not allocated to run the hospital and that the hospital will be forced to cut services in wake of funding cuts this financial year.

He said "Last year the Townsville Hospital came in on budget and this year it's been under-funded for some unknown reason and out of that under-funding they still need to find the increased funding for the pay rises that have happened in the nursing sector and the medical sector."
