After India now it is time for the medical students in Scotland to voice their opinion against the hike in their fees. British students held demonstrations //outside the Scottish Parliament to show their disapproval. The students said that the fees of up to ￡2,700 were very much close to the top-up fees. But ministers and Scottish Executive say that they were opposed to top-up fees.

But last year the Scottish ministers passed the Further and Higher Education Bill which gave the right to the ministers to set higher fee levels in order to protect the interests of Scottish students. The annual fee for undergraduate courses in Scotland which was below ￡1,200 would rise to ￡1,700 while for medical courses it would rise to ￡2,700. On the other hand in England from the autumn the annual tuition fees would be a maximum of ￡3,000 depending on the institution. The National Union of Students Scotland is against the increase in Scottish fees. Melanie Ward, president of NUS Scotland, said such increase in the fees would drastically change the situation where students would choose the course depending on their ability to afford it.
