Medical Colleges, Confident of Meeting Standards Before 90-days deadline

The state governed medical colleges have not much to improve their standards, as stipulated by the Medical Council of India (MCI) //, which has given them a three month deadline to comply with the norms or face a risk of de-affiliation.

MCI is the authorized body that has the power to accord affiliation to medical colleges across the country, has issued a 90-day deadline for the three colleges, which is due to end in May.

A month has passed since the meeting, but Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College, Hospital (Jamshedpur), Patliputra Medical College and Hospital (Dhanbad) and Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (Ranchi) have not done much to comply with guidelines.

Gajendra Thakur, a member of the executive body of MCI and president of the Bihar chapter of the Indian Medical Association (IMA). Thakur said: “The de-affiliation was deferred for 90 days on condition that the institutions improve the facilities to ensure bed occupancy in their hospitals.”

The area that need to be spruced up range from an inoperative ICU, CT scan facility, or even for that matter availability of teaching staff , which continues to haunt the medical colleges in question. Despite funds being provided to the hospitals to facilitate the requirements, precious little has bee done.

Jagannath Prasad, former acting director of RIMS and head of department, anaesthesia, said, “Steps are being taken to ensure that the deficiencies pointed out are rectified at the earliest.”

The colleges are hopeful of complying with the stipulations before the deadline is over.
