Mechanical Heart

The world's first self-contained mechanical heart has been implanted and the patient is resting comfortably after the seven hour operation, a US hospital has announced.

The revolutionary procedure is the first major advance in the development of an artificial replacement heart in nearly two decades. If successful, the device could help thousands of patients who die each year waiting for a heart transplant.

Patients considered for the implant were critically ill with fewer than 30 days to live and the life expectancy of the patient who got the new device is expected to be extended by about a month.
