Man's Memory Awakens After Twenty Years

Terry Wallis who is now 42 years old has been slightly unconscious and has recovered after a period of 20 years//.

His nerves were completely sheared in a car crash and he was in a state of partial coma wherein he communicated with others by means of grunts and nods. But now his speech and movement were slowly improving. The doctors and researchers said that the tiny nerve connections in his brain slowly started to rewire.

He is the only person in US to recover so dramatically so long after a severe brain injury. But he still needs assistance while eating and walking and can count to 25 without interruption. His recovery occurred three years ago at a rehabilitation center in Mountain View, Ark. But the doctors do not know how to make cases like Wallis recover. Dr. Ross Zafonte, rehabilitation chief at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, told the press that family members of such people should not wrongly think that we have the miracle cure.

Wallis is not aware of the twenty years but is aware of the life before the injury. The research on Wallis will be published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation. This is led by the imaging expert Henning Voss and neurologist Dr. Nicholas Schiff at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University in New York City and included doctors at JFK Medical Center in Edison, N.J.
