Malnutrition on decline among school children in Chandigarh

Malnutrition among school children in Chandigarh's rural areas and colonies has come down, said a report of the local health authorities.//

A health department official said Tuesday the survey of school children, up to Class 5, revealed that malnutrition had come down by 22 percent in the last one year, ever since the mid-day meal scheme was introduced in some government schools of the union territory.

A survey conducted August last year had revealed malnutrition in 72.2 percent of the students up to Class 5. A fresh survey in August this year, in the same schools showed malnutrition level at 49.8 percent.

The survey also showed that malnutrition among students between Class 6 and 10 had come down from 80 percent to 76 percent.

The survey this year included 553 students as samples compared to 375 last year.

Nearly 40 government schools in the union territory's rural areas and colonies were covered under the mid-day meal scheme.

The Chandigarh industrial and tourism development corporation (Citco) and the Institute of Hotel Management prepare the meals for the students here.
