Recent research from Kansas State University have revealed that males tend to take greater risks takers in their use of alcohol whereas women on average often// use more protective strategies such as drinking only with friends, limiting the amount of money spent on drinking, counting the number of drinks, and eating food before drinking.

The researchers examined risk taking from the point of view of a whole class of high school seniors that were about to embark on the college experience.

Steve Benton, professor of counseling and educational psychology, says, “Students who tend to have attitudes that make them greater risk takers are more likely to get into trouble when drinking.”

He continues. ‘Even when controlling the amount of alcohol, it's not how much you drink that affects the amount of trouble, but how risky you are’.”

According to him a person who doesn't care about the opinion of other people nor about laws were more likely to get into trouble whereas those with a lower-risk attitude had lesser chances of getting into trouble.

Benton reveals the fact that males tend to be heavier drinkers than females with chances of getting into trouble increasing with the number of drinks.

Researchers advise the benefits of adopting certain protective strategies by male students as well as any students who have six or more drinks.

When they go to parties, they should be aware of their behavior and how much they're drinking, Steve Benton said. He recommends they pace their drinking over several hours.
