According to a study, the major cause of death in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is multiple organ failure. The risk factors involved are failure of central nervous system// and cardiovascular system. The study also revealed that the other factors responsible for the death of patients who are out of the ICU but still in hospital are malignant tumours and aggravation of cardiovascular disorder.

This study is published in the journal Critical Care. Investigation of death cause in 3,700 patients admitted to the ICUs was carried out by Viktoria Mayr and colleagues from Innsbruck Medical University in association with researchers from other organizations in Austria. The analysis included cause of death in ICU, in the hospital after discharged from the ICU and a year after admission to the ICU.

According to the results, acute and chronic multiple organ failure is responsible for 47% of the deaths in the ICU. The major risk factors of death in the patients in the ICU are central nervous system failure (16.07%) and cardiovascular failure (12%).

In the patients discharged from the ICU a year after admission to the ICU, malignant tumour is responsible for death in over 1/3rds of them. 19.4% of the deaths after discharge from the ICU were caused by aggravation of chronic cardiovascular disease.
